Commandant Gade Waste Collection Carts To Be Permanently Removed

News / Virgin Islands / June 30, 2015

ST. THOMAS — The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (WMA) is advising residents living on Commandant Gade that solid waste collection carts in the area will be permanently removed on Saturday, July 4.

According to a press release the government agency issued on Monday, residents residing in Commandant Gade are advised to use the WMA carts located on Garden Street.

WMA said regular servicing of the carts on Commandant Gade has been challenging because of the narrow roadway and daily obstruction caused by parked vehicles. This made it difficult for the WMA collection trucks to traverse the area and access the carts on a daily basis.

After discussions with area residents, the St. Thomas Administrator and the Governor’s Offices, the decision was made to permanently remove the carts on Commandant Gade, WMA said.

Upon removal of the carts, a “NO DUMPING” sign will be placed in the area. The government agency also reminded the public that illegal disposal of waste is a criminal offence and is punishable by citations of up to $1,000, or imprisonment of up to 180 days.
