ST. THOMAS — Members of the Committee on Rules and Judiciary, chaired by Sen. Kenneth Gittens, supported bill No. 31-0097, sponsored by Sen. Justin Harrigan, Sr. at the Earl B. Ottley Hall on Tuesday that clears the way for veterans holding taxi medallions to immediately sell or lease the prized item.
Under current law, holders of medallions must wait three years before leasing or selling, but Harrigan, Sr., citing compassion for veterans who are unable to work or are physically impaired, said the measure would work as a means through which veterans can earn a living.
Language in the measure did not detail what “veterans” meant in relation to leasing or selling the medallion at anytime. However, Harrigan later explained that it meant veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces.
The measure was passed 5-0, with Senators Gittens, Harrigan, Sr., Novelle Francis, Neville James and Jean Forde voting in the affirmative. Nereida Rivera-O’Reillly abstained and Janette Millin Young was absent.
