WTJX-TV will pay special tribute to the oldest and longest-living Virgin Islander, Ursula “Aunt Sula” Krigger who died on Thursday, September 10, at the remarkable age of 113, according to a press release the government-owned broadcast issued on Wednesday.
The former educator, culture bearer and Virgin Islands icon can be seen on WTJX Channel 12/90 this Wednesday, September 16th beginning at 9:00pm, immediately after FACE TO FACE with Addie Ottley. During a segment of the program, Transfer Reflections 2010, Mrs. Krigger vividly recounts the many crowning points in Virgin Islands history that few have lived to talk about. Although she was only fifteen years old in 1917, she was privileged to witness many transforming aspects of Virgin Islands lifestyle and culture–from the end of Danish rule and subsequent naval rule, the establishment of civilian government, to the first elected Governor in the Territory.
Mrs. Krigger will be remembered for her strong will, and her capacity to overcome major challenges, including a severe bout with Typhoid fever in her early life. She would later become respected for her commitment and love for family and community. Her teaching career began at the early age of 15 at the Bonne Resolution School on St. Thomas’ North Side. She would later leave her profession following her marriage to the late Laurence Krigger and the arrival of their two sons, Alaric and Ashton.
WJTX would like to add our voice to the many Virgin Islanders who have benefited from the life of Aunt Sula. We hope that the spirits of her family and our community will be lifted as we revisit a portion of her life in video, this coming Wednesday, at 9:00pm on WTJX.
