ST. CROIX — A 27-year-old Estate Williams Delight man was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment on Sunday at about 9:34 p.m. after leading police officers on a high-speed chase on the Queen Mary Highway (Centerline Road), VIPD Public Information Officer Kevin Jackson announced today.
According to Jackson, while on regular patrol, officers observed a vehicle being operated erratically as it traveled west, prompting the officers to engage.
Upon arriving at some traffic stoplights, officers requested the vehicle’s operator, who was speaking on his mobile phone, to end his call. The suspect ignored and suddenly sped off at a high rate of speed. The patrol unit immediately followed in pursuit.
As officers followed, the suspect damaged the under carriage of the vehicle he was operating, causing an oil leakage. The suspect’s vehicle eventually became disabled in the Mt. Pleasant-West area and as the patrol unit approached, the suspect got out of the vehicle and discharged at least one gunshot at the officers before fleeing the area on foot.
He has been identified Kishawn Lopez.
A check of the vehicle’s registration showed that it was registered to a woman later identified as the Lopez’s girlfriend. After several attempts, the officers were able to make contact with Lopez, who was positively identified by the officers involved.
Unable to make bail of $10,000, Lopez was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending his advise-of-rights hearing.
