ST. THOMAS — October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and for the second year in a row Mahogany Run is hosting “Think Pink,” a series of events to raise awareness and funds for the cause, according to a press release Mahogany Run issued Thursday.
The heart of this event began beating in 2014 after Barbara Michaud, a loyal employee of The Grille at Mahogany Run for seven years, survived her own battle with breast cancer. “I was helped by many people and felt that it was my turn to help others,” she said.
Michaud shared that thought with Food and Beverage Director, Morgan Meece and the duo developed a month-long promotion geared toward engaging patrons from all walks of life. “We wanted to ‘pay it forward’ by providing information as well as financial support,” Michaud said.
Added Meece, “Mahogany Run was able to donate $16,000 last year. This year, the goal of this campaign is $20,000.”
To that end, throughout October, The Grille at Mahogany Run is donating $1 each time a patron orders specially selected dishes from the lunch and brunch menus. Those choices are designated with a pink ribbon. With each glass of Jean Luc Colombo Rosé purchased, $4 will be donated.
Additionally, raffle tickets are being sold at $5 each or a book of five for $20. “We have a lot of fabulous prizes this year including gift certificates from island businesses,” said Meece.
Three special events are slated where 100 percent of the proceeds will be donated thanks to all of the sponsors. The first event will be the ‘Chip In For The Pink’ golf tournament Sunday Oct. 11 at 2 p.m. The nine-hole, two-person scramble is limited to 36-teams and is being sponsored by Quantico Consulting Services as well as Bellows International.
“This year, we added a Ladies Sip & Dip,” said Meece. The event takes places from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday October 14 and includes wine, cheese, and a canvas of personal artwork. Limited to 35 guests, tickets are $35 per person. Sponsors are Art Haven, Kool Kidz, Caribbean Food Service and Kellerhals Ferguson Kroblin, PLLC.
On Thursday October 29, the ‘Drink Pink Wine Tasting’ will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Mahogany Room. The $55 per person ticket price will include five tastings and a selection of hors d’oeuvres. This tasting also will feature a silent auction. Said Meece, “We are making our ‘Drink Pink’ event bigger and better with more high quality wines to choose from as well as very exciting silent auction items.”
Sponsors for ‘Drink Pink’ include Theodore Tunick & Co.; Real Impact Corp.; Baker, Magras & Associates; Cornerstone Insurance; Alpine Securities; ICMC; Coral World; Little Switzerland; Sea Glass Properties; Quantico Consulting Services; West Indies Corporation; Bellows International; East End Flower Shop.
All funds raised from the Mahogany Run ‘Think Pink’ Breast Cancer Awareness promotion will be gifted to local breast cancer patients through the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands —CFVI — and the American Cancer Society.
