Claude O. Markoe Elementary Students To Benefit From Local Talent On National Day On Writing

Education / News / Virgin Islands / October 13, 2015

ST. CROIX – Students at the Claude O. Markoe Elementary School will hear from poets, journalists, authors and other literary persons during the National Day On Writing observance scheduled for Tuesday, October 20, a press release the Department of Education issued last Friday has made known.

According to Assistant Principal Dr. Sharon Charles, the annual observance is conducted in conjunction with the National Council of Teachers of English and is celebrated in many school districts across the United States.

“The importance of writing in the lives of students and those in our community will be highlighted,” Dr. Charles said. “Literary persons to include members of the Virgin Islands Writing Project and Language Arts students at the St. Croix Educational Complex are invited to talk to students about the importance of writing, share a piece they have written or a piece from their favorite author, and engage students in a writing activity.”

In preparation for the October 20 event, students in K-6 have been engaged in a variety of writing activities based on the theme “Celebrate Claude O. Markoe Through Writing.” Students in grades 3-6 are also involved in an essay-writing competition based on the topic “What Makes Claude O. Markoe School Great.”

For more information, contact Dr. Sharon Charles at (340) 772-4510.
