ST. CROIX — Governor Kenneth Mapp will grant administrative leave to government employees choosing to volunteer for the upcoming Project Homeless Connect, a press release Government House issued today has revealed. The release further stated that homelessness and mental health issues remain a priority for the administration.
The Department of Human Services, with the support of the Office of the Governor, the United Way of the U.S. Virgin Islands along with other community partners, will be conducting three Project Homeless Connect events in the territory during the last two months of this year. The events are scheduled as follows:
- St. Croix – Friday, November 13th, 2015
- St. John – Friday, November 20th, 2015
- St. Thomas – Friday, December 4th, 2015
Project Homeless Connect is an innovative initiative that was started in San Francisco, California and has received national recognition for its success. The program is a one-stop shop where individuals who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless can access care and a host of services all in one place. This is the eighth year that the event will be held here and St. Thomas, and the fourth year on St. John.
In 2014, Project Homeless Connect served 230 persons on St. Thomas, 170 here, and 42 on St. John. The impact is evident not only for the participants who receive services and care, but for the community that is engaged through volunteering, according to the release.
The success of these events depends greatly on the participation of a large group of volunteers, many of whom are employees of the central government and semi-autonomous agencies. For questions and concerns, contact the Department of Human Services at (340) 718-2980 (St. Croix) or (340) 774-1166 (St. Thomas).
