Sports, Parks And Recreation Announces Inter-Neighborhood Sports Competition

News / Virgin Islands / December 9, 2015

ST. CROIX — The Department of Sports, Parks and Recreation today announced via press release the development of what it’s calling an inter-neighborhood sports competition, which the department’s commissioner, Pedro Cruz, says will help take the DSP&R into the communities to affect change.

“I believe that we would reach-out to more children and youth by going in to the respective communities, so all children and youth would have the opportunity to participate and enjoy the benefits of the programs,” Mr. Cruz said. “In the District of St. Thomas, we will commence at the Griffith Ballpark on January 23, 2016 and then start from west-end (Budhoe Community) moving to east-end and ending at St. John following the same trend.”

According to the release, the program on St. Croix will also commence in the month of January beginning at the DC Canegata Ballpark, and will make its way to the wast of the island.

“We intend to cover at least 10 communities during the calendar year in the respective districts,” Mr. Cruz said. “It is the moment to go that extra mile to assure that our children and young people participate and receive the good discipline which is delivered through our sports programs. The Department of Sports, Parks and Recreation staff stands ready to serve the athletes.”

In closing Mr. Cruz encouraged parents, community leaders and community organizations to participate by partnering with DSP&R.

“Each community will know in advance their opportunity and hope that children and youth would be motivated to participate,” he said.
