ST. CROIX — An early morning heist saw an ATM machine stationed at Gateway Gas Station in Peter’s Rest being yanked off its placement and dragged through the streets after being attached to a vehicle by an unknown suspect early this morning, VIPD Public Information Officer Kevin Jackson has revealed.
According to Mr. Jackson, at about 3:57 a.m. on Friday, the 911 emergency call center notified officers of a grand larceny incident that occurred at the gas station, adjacent to the Yum Yum fast food restaurant.
Responding officers arrived at the scene and met with an employee of the service station, who stated that at 3:47 a.m., he saw an older model, white-colored SUV being operated by an unknown male wearing a black hoodie that obscured his face from view, reverse into the service station.
The unknown male reversed the vehicle up to the ATM unit, got out and threw a large rope over it, got back into the vehicle and drove off — pulling the ATM unit from its placement as he drove off onto Centerline Road, dragging the unit behind him.
Police are currently investigating the matter, and are asking anyone with information relative to the occurrence to call 911 or the anonymous tip service, Crime Stoppers USVI, at 1-800-222-8477.
