New Feature On VI Consortium Highlights Virgin Islanders Striving For Success

ST. CROIX — If you’ve never heard of Nykole Tyson, the host of “I Am Making It Happen”, you’re about to become very familiar with the ambitious local, who’s managed to create a fast-growing video feature with a simple mission: highlight those in our community who are striving to succeed. Above, Ms. Tyson.

The Consortium has partnered with Ms. Tyson to make available the interviews on Wednesdays on the publication’s website and on its Facebook platform. The videos will be available on Ms. Tyson’s Facebook and Youtube platforms as well. The idea behind the partnership is to help foster positivity throughout the islands, and to encourage those with ideas sitting on the sidelines to, pun intended, make it happen.

While her initial efforts will be intentionally focused on the territory, Ms. Tyson, who is currently employed at Senator Terrence Nelson’s office as director of communications, intends to expand further into the Caribbean as her company grows. She has a bachelor’s degree in mass communications with minors of business and journalism from William McDaniel College in Westminster, MD, and is a graduate of the St. Croix Educational Complex class of 2002.

The Consortium asked the enthusiastic Virgin Islander a few questions about her new concept.

Q: How did you come up with the name?

Ms. Tyson: I was on the phone with a friend and we were talking about the transitioning in careers that we were embarking on, him in comedy and me in media communications. And I said, I don’t know how, but I’m going to make it happen! And then he said he was tired of waiting for someone to discover him and that instead he would discover himself. I thought it was a funny statement but then I took it serious and said, ‘I’m Making It Happen could be big.’

Q: What inspired you to push forward with the show now?

Ms. Tyson: Friends who knew of the concept would occasionally ask me about what I was doing to bring it to fruition, and my excuse would be that I’m either too tired or have a lot of work to do. But on November 2, 2015, one of them got hard on me and said that I needed to make the time and do it now. I took the advice and decided to complete my first interview in November. Since then I have completed 5 interviews and counting.

Q: What do you want people to take away from the show?

Ms. Tyson: That sometimes in order to achieve the things you want to in life you must go after them and make your own way. Sometimes it won’t be the conventional way because waiting for an opportunity might just never come. So you’ve got to make it happen and create opportunities for yourself. And that is the essence of what “I’m Making It Happen” is all about.

Her first video to be published here and on VIC’s Facebook platform is below.

I wear many hats, I suppose, but the one which fits me best would be journalism, second to that would be radio personality, thirdly singer/songwriter and down the line. I've been the Editor-In-Chief at my videogames website, Gamesthirst, for over 5 years, writing over 7,000 articles and more than 2 million words. I'm also very passionate about where I live, the United States Virgin Islands, and I'm intent on making it a better place by being resourceful and keeping our leaders honest. VI Consortium was birthed out of said desire, hopefully my efforts bear fruit. Reach me at [email protected].
