ST. CROIX — On Thursday, the Virgin Islands Territorial Emergency Management Agency’s territory-wide tsunami evacuation drill — a Caribbean region tsunami response exercise — saw participants from various government entities, including schools, Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority and the Legislature.
Among them, Juanita Gardine Elementary School, which, as the video below will attest to, conducted a rather successful and seamless evacuation.
The students, faculty and staff left the school, located in Estate Richmond near the Charles Harwood Hospital, and ventured up a 110 feet hill, landing just above the A-Z Academy School, according to Renee Hansen, Department of Education’s program manager for safe schools. Ms. Hansen said yesterday’s exercise focused on safe evacuation, as well as making sure that staff and students were accounted for.
