Students From Antilles And Good Hope Country Day Schools To Represent Territory In National MathCounts Competition

Antilles School students Divyesh Gurnani, Amisha Mirchandani and Kashish Chainani, along with Hannah Boring of Good Hope Country Day will represent the U.S. Virgin Islands in the 2016 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Championship scheduled for May 7–10, 2016 in Washington, D. C. 

Kieran Walter-Sundaran and Dominique Elizee of Good Hope Country Day, and Azad Daswani and Viren Punjabi of Antilles will accompany the team which will be coached by Michel Humphries of Antilles on St. Thomas.

The students won the rights to represent the Virgin Islands during State MATHCOUNTS competition held on Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at the Good Hope Country Day School Pavilion.

Kashish Chainani was the winner in the countdown round, while first place individual winner Divyesh Gurnani placed second in the countdown round.

Other competitors in the V.I. State MATHCOUNTS competition were Gidal Williams, Church of God Holiness Academy; Mohit Mirpuri, Antilles; Tanya Mirchandani, Antilles, Adrian Ricketts, Good Hope Country Day; Carter Maltby, Montessori; Djemal Boucena, Church of God Holiness Academy; Rhea Rupani, Antilles; Karim Henry, Eulalie R. Rivera Elementary; Brandon Wilson, Church of God Academy; Milan Sakhrani, Antilles; Carolyn Grimm, Good Hope Country Day and Amari Desouza of the Elena Christian Junior High School.

MATHCOUNTS is coordinated by math coordinators Juanita Boneque in the St. Croix district and Avon Benjamin in the St. Thomas-St. John district. Ludence Romney serves as the State MATHCOUNTS coordinator.

MATHCOUNTS is a national program designed to improve math skills among U.S. students. The program focuses on middle school students who are at a crucial stage in developing and sustaining math interest and ability.
