ST. THOMAS — Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett, in conjunction with the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts, invites the public to attend the 2016 Virgin Islands District Congressional Art Competition exhibit.
The Art Competition exhibit will be held on Friday, April 15, 2016 at the Virgin Islands Council of the Arts on St. Thomas from 4-6 pm.
Thousands of high school students from across the nation participate in the annual Congressional Art Competition. One winner from each Congressional District is chosen to have their artwork displayed at the Capitol for one year, where more than three million visitors pass through every year.
In 2015, Julian Bishop, then a sophomore at the Good Hope Country Day School, submitted the winning artwork. He submitted a portrait entitled, “Portrait in Maroon,” which captured St. Croix native Oceana James.
“The Congressional Art Competition is a great way for students in our territory to express themselves through art,” said Ms. Plaskett.
“It is amazing to see the quality of art these students make, it is a pleasure to walk through the halls of the Capitol and see a slice of home from our talented young Virgin Islanders hanging right here in Washington, representing our district.”
Students and teachers who are participating in this year’s competition are reminded to complete and submit their artwork by the Monday, April 11 deadline. Art work can be delivered to Virgin Islands Council of Arts office on St. Thomas or District offices.
Only one High school participant will be chosen from St. Thomas/St. John and St. Croix. The winning artwork will be displayed in the United States Capitol for a year and the winner will receive a free trip to Washington, DC for an annual Awards Ceremony.
