ST. CROIX — Visitors to the Virgin Islands National Parks spent an estimated $62.1 million in 2015, according to the National Park Service’s latest Visitor Spending Effects report. The report says these expenditures supported a total of 819 jobs, $30.7 million in labor income, $54.2 million in value added, and $83.5 million in economic output in local gateway economies surrounding N.P.S.
The results show modest growth in the N.P.S.’s economic impact in the territory compared to 2014, when visitors spent $59.8 million; supported 789 jobs; aided labor income with a total of $29.5 million, added value of $52.1 million, and saw economic output of $80 million. The latest numbers, however, are still below the highs of 2012, when visitors spent $69.9 million; supported 875 jobs; contributed $37 million to labor income, added value of $64.9 million to the local economy, and saw an economic output of $100 million.
On a national level, park visitors spent an estimated $16.9 billion in local gateway regions while visiting N.P.S. lands across the country. These expenditures supported a total of $295,000 jobs, $11.1 billion in labor income, $18.4 billion in value added, and $32 billion in economic output in the national economy.
