ST. THOMAS — In the U.S. Virgin Islands, 1 in 4 women, 1 in 6 children and 1 in 7 men are victims of sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse. To bring awareness to this epidemic in her home, Family Resource Center (F.R.C.) volunteer, Chantel Hoheb, created the #PlanForHelpVI initiative encouraging members of the community to form a personal disaster plan if one of these unfortunate events should occur, a press release issued by Make-Lite Marketing makes known.
The campaign entitled #WhoWouldYouCall, urges Virgin Islanders to ask themselves who they would call if they needed help. You and your #HELPpartner then create a plan of action.
By being prepared for a personal disaster, victims and those affected can hope to have a quicker recovery resulting in less time spent in the cycle of violence. To join this campaign, download the #WhoWouldYouCall photo here, then visit www.frcusvi.org/donate to make a $5 donation and see how you can help, according to the release. “Agencies like F.R.C. are unfortunately necessary in our community but they won’t continue to exist unless we support them as a community,” says campaign creator Chantel Hoheb. Ms. Hoheb encouraged everyone to donate what they to the private nonprofit.
F.R.C., formerly Women’s Resource Center was incorporated in 1987 to establish a counseling program and a shelter for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. The organization’s services began in 1986 with the opening of its emergency shelter for women and children. Since that time F.R.C. has expanded its services to include all victims of violent crime and families in crisis, according to the release.
