Women’s Coalition Annual Race Moves To Frederiksted With Music And More To Promote Peace, Hope And Justice

ST. CROIX — The Women’s Coalition of St. Croix (W.C.S.C.) will hold the 32nd annual Women Race on Sunday, June 5, in Frederiksted, according to a press release the nonprofit issued Friday.

Pre-registration for W.C.S.C.’s annual two-mile race for women and girls is ongoing at selected locations. The race is organized by the V.I. Pace Runners.

“The Women Race is a great way for everyone in the community to come together and support positive change while enjoying healthy activity,” says Clema Lewis, W.C.S.C.’s executive director. Only women and girls can enter the race, but fun is had by all at the festive affair. Domestic violence survivors participate in the Women Race every year, proudly demonstrating growth and healing from the trauma of abusive relationships, sexual assault and other crimes, according to the release. Supporters of all gender identities will gather to cheer on the racers as they run, jog, and walk through the streets of Frederiksted.

DJ Myron will keep the crowd moving to great music on and off the race route. Reggae artist Tia, accompanied by a new girl group, The Namesakes, will be the featured performers for the event.

Pre-registration is available through W.C.S.C.’s secure online form and at the following locations:

• W.C.S.C.’s Crisis Center – 45 Fisher Street, Christiansted

• W.C.S.C.’s Closet To Closet Thrift Store – 15 Peter’s Rest

In addition, registration tables will be at the following locations on the dates listed below, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon:

1. May 28th – Cost-U-Less,Kmart – Sunny Isle ShoppingCenter, Kmart -Sunshine Mall.

2. June 4th – Cost-U-Less,Kmart-Sunny Isle Shopping Center, Kmart – Sunshine Mall, Frederiksted Post Office.

The pre-registration entry fee is $15.00, and includes a commemorative t-shirt. Registration on Race Day is $20.00. Girls aged 13 and under can register for $1.00, t-shirt not included.

This year’s event major sponsors include: Sonya, Ltd., Caribbean Reservations Inc., Bank of St. Croix, ADT Security, AARP, Denali Asset Management LLLP, and Banco Popular. Supporting sponsors are: American Infrastructure Development, Isle 95, T.E.A.M. Consultants, Scotiabank, Sunny Isle Developers; and contributing sponsors are: Pediatric Care Center, Broadband VI and Continuum Care.

Patrons include Quality Auto Parts, Nancy Proctor & Lavonne Wise, Polly’s at the Pier, Dr. Marc Jerome, Sterisil International and Plaza Extra East.

Schools, organizations and businesses may enter teams in the women’s race as well, according to the release. Teams who pre-register will receive special certificates. The fastest team (minimum of five members) will receive a trophy. The Mary Mingus Trophy will be awarded to the school with the most participants (minimum of 25 members).

Awards will be given to racers in several categories, including presentations to overall winners and top age-group finishers. Commemorative caps will be given to 35 randomly selected women and girls who pre-register, in celebration of W.C.S.C.’s anniversary year of service to victims and survivors in the community.

Winners will be announced on race day.
