ST. THOMAS — A well-known sailor who lived on Hassle Island was found dead on Sunday at 10:00 p.m. in the waters of Yacht Haven Grande, V.I.P.D. Media Specialist Sakeeda Freeman announced today.
According to Ms. Freeman, upon arrival on the scene, officers made contact with an unresponsive Caucasian male lying face up on the dingy dock. He was later positively identified by his next of kin as Manfred Dittrich, 80 of Hassle Island.
Ms. Freeman said Mr. Dittrich’s body was then taken to the morgue at the Roy L. Schneider Medical Center. Though the case is presently under investigation, police say there were no signs of foul play, after detectives with the Forensic Unit processed the scene for evidence. The force is, however, seeking the community’s assistance by asking for information that may lead to the cause of Mr. Dittrich’s death.
On Facebook, Mr. Dittrich’s son, RembrandtLee Dittrich, spoke of his father’s death and expressed sorrow.
“My father has passed. I’m devastated,” he wrote. “I’m still in shock.” RembrandtLee said there would be gatherings on Hassle Island celebrating his father’s legacy.
“Manfred was an amazing person. So full of life and always wanting to help. He will be missed,” said Ian Finn in the comments section of the son’s post about his father.
“He was a wonderful guy, he was a friend to everybody. He helped everybody all the time, including me,” said Scott Nichols.
