Five Percent Property Tax Discount Discontinued; Potter Says

Community Center / News / Virgin Islands / July 15, 2016

ST. CROIX —  The 2016 property tax bills issued to all property owners on record as of January 1, will not offer the 5 percent discount as in previous years, Lieutenant Governor Osbert Potter announced this week.

According to the release, the 5 percent discount was discontinued because the Office of the Tax Assessor will no longer issue two bills each year. The discount was given to assist property owners to offset hardship as a result of issuing two bills in the same year.

The release adds that the Office of the Tax Assessor is now on schedule with the issuance of the property tax bills, therefore it will issue one bill per year going forward.

Additionally, most property owners can apply for the credits that are currently available, including General Homestead, Veterans, Seniors, Disabled, Class 1 Inheritance, Visitable Home, and Virgin Islands Farmers.

Property tax bills can be paid online at the Office of the Lieutenant Governor’s website at https://propertytax.vi.gov. However, payment plans must still be made through the Office of the Tax Collector, the release concludes.
