Primary Election Early Voting Starts Tuesday In Territory Ahead Of August 6

Featured / News / Politics / Virgin Islands / July 25, 2016

Early voting in the U.S. Virgin Islands starts Tuesday and runs through Sunday, July 31, the territory’s elections system reminded via press release today. The ability to cast ballots before primary election day, taking place August 6 this year, has traditionally conveniently served residents who may be working on election day, or want to vote early to avoid the rush.

In St. Croix, early voting will be held at the Sunny Isle Annex Unit 4, which is adjacent to the Social Security Building. In St. Thomas it will take place at 9200 Lockhart Gardens, located above Banco Popular, and in St. John early voting will be held at the St. John Marketplace, Suite II, according to the Elections System.

“All first-time voters must present identification when they come in to vote,” said Elections System Supervisor Caronline Fawkes. She added that the tabulation of votes cast during early voting made not be conducted before the close of polls on election day.

And in keeping with recently enacted Virgin Islands law, Ms. Fawkes warned that no electioneering will be allowed at polling sites during early voting or on election day.

Official election filings revealed a myriad of new names for the senate race specifically. They reveal that all of the senators from the St. Croix district will be back in the contest, and in an about-turn, Senator Nereida Rivera-O’Reilly, who told The Consortium in April that she had grown tired of the Senate, will run for reelection.

Some new names for Senate in the St. Croix district include Terrence D. Joseph, Ignacio Llanos III, George Moore, Patricia James, Robert B. Moorehead, Duane Howell, Agustin Q. Salas, Troy Mason, Anselma John-Ayala and others.

Alicia Hansen is back in the race as well.

In the St. Thomas-St. John district, the usual suspects are seeking reelection, but Senator Clifford Graham, long rumored to stay out of the race, is not on the ballot. At-Large senator Almando “Rock” Liburd won’t seek reelection either.

New candidates for the Legislature in the St. Thomas-St. John district include Bruce C. Flamon, Brian A. Smith, Dwayne Degraff, Kevin A. Rodriguez, Ivy K. Moses, Margaret Price, Margaret PriceStephen M. Frett, Patrick S. Sprauve, Maxwell A. Carty and others.
