UVI Voices Of Inspiration Blesses St. Kitts With Masterful Concert Performance

Featured / News / Top Stories / Virgin Islands / August 8, 2016

The University of the Virgin Islands’s Voices of Inspiration Community Choir presented a concert tour performance of “A Musical Journey Through Time” in the Saba St. Kitts Ballroom at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort Hotel on Saturday, U.V.I. has made known via press release.

The UVI Voices of Inspiration opened the musical concert and cultural heritage education journey with songs of Africa, spiritual roots of gospel and as the production continued, sounds of classical jazz, bebop, hip-hop, Caribbean-flavored gospel and more — creating a crescendo of music, drama, theatre and liturgical dance that captivated and inspired movement to virtually all in the well-attended event, U.V.I. said.

Vibrant choreography of movements, sounds and spirit throughout the entire concert were professionally, artistically and spiritually led by UVI Music Program instructor and director of the UVI Voices of Inspiration, Josephine Thomas Lewis. The unity of the community was vibrant, joyful and reflected the ambassadorial spirit of UVI with a special touch of the people’s cultural-capital of St. Croix, according to the release, as the Voices of Inspiration Community Choir is based within the music program in UVI’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences on the Albert A. Sheen Campus.

Major contributions was provided for the concert tour by Dr. Simon B. Jones Hendrickson, a platinum sponsor, who is a former dean of the UVI College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and former chief economic and policy advisor of the Mapp administration. Resourceful and spiritual support were provided by the Calvary Baptist Church of Sandy Point, St. Kitts, where a community-wide concert performance was held on Friday, despite torrential rains in St. Kitts from a tropical wave depression, according to the release.

The St. Kitts media welcomed choir representatives to share a message of joy, peace, unity and the importance of spiritual worship and praise for a few days before the concert performances. The touring representatives of the choir included over 18 members of the larger group, UVI said.

Among those in attendance were St. Kitts and Nevis’s Governor General Dr. Tapley, and the Premier of Nevis Vance Amory. The engaged and lively audience also included many distinguished and proud UVI alumni, according to the release.

The successful and well-attended event highlighted that UVI remains committed to community engagement as the only Historical Black College and University and Land Grant Institution in the Caribbean, according to the release. At the close of the concert, the choir received invitations to Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and other destinations. The choir hopes to share its performances throughout the Caribbean, according to the release.
