ST. CROIX — The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority is scheduled to begin Phase I of the Christiansted Rehabilitation Project on Company Street in Christiansted town, WAPA announced via press release late Monday.
The announcement follows incessant complaints from residents and lawmakers alike, who have decried the road as substandard, with Senator Neville James stating that the bad road was hurting a town already strapped for business.
According to WAPA, the project will include the replacement of 1,800 linear feet of waterline along Company Street between the Christiansted cemetery and the Church Street intersection. Work begins today and should last until Monday, November 14, 2016 for a duration of 96 calendar days.
The project is funded through the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Drinking Water State Revolving Fund and administered through the Department of Planning and Natural Resources’s Drinking Water Capital Improvement Grant Program as a sub-grant award to WAPA. The project total for this contract is $299,500.00 and has been awarded to V.I. Paving, Inc. to complete the waterline installation and roadway compaction.
Motorists are encouraged to be aware of the work zone to ensure the safety of the workers and follow all the necessary detours that will be posted at the job site in the appropriate locations. Throughout the project, WAPA will make every effort to minimize all service interruptions for both the electrical and water customers within the affected areas, according to the release.
WPAPA apologized for any inconvenience that the water distribution enhancement project may cause and will work to ensure that it is completed in a timely manner.
