Parks, Sports And Recreation Opens New Website Aimed At Helping Residents Find Information

Community Center / News / Virgin Islands / August 21, 2016

ST. CROIX — The Department of Sports, Parks and Recreation has launched a new website that the department’s webmaster, Miguel Marrero, said is aimed at helping residents find information relating to D.S.P.R., especially those seeking to rent one of its multitude of facilities.

“The website is an information center that I put together so people could find out about facilities for rent like the cabanas at Cramer Park, the multipurpose building at Canegata and the pool in Frederiksted,” Mr. Marrero said. “People have been calling almost everyday, tying up the phone lines for simple questions like how to rent the buildings. Some people have kids and they want to enroll them in a sport, so instead of calling and and trying to determine who to talk to, all this information is now available on the site.”

The site, seen here, includes 10 menu items, most with drop-down menu options that offer more pointed links. For example, hover over the “Sports” icon and you’ll be led to further options such as softball, boxing, cheerleading, basketball and marine sports. Do the same over the “Facilities” icon, and you’ll be directed to choose an island, which then shows the facilities available for use and those that are not. A “Forms” icon makes it easy to print and fill out. There does not appear to be a system that allows for online application, and the website has some issues that need to be righted, including making sure that when the “After School Programs” link is clicked on, it does not lead to a blank page.  Hover over the same icon and drop-down options appear.

There’s a new portal as well, which keeps up with the events of the department and its commissioner, Pedro Cruz.

“This is for the community so they could always know what we’re doing,” Mr. Marrero concluded.
