The Virgin Islands Territorial Emergency Management Agency said early Tuesday that it’s monitoring a weather systems developing in the Tropical Atlantic.
Invest 99 L
Invest 99 L, a tropical wave located about 550 miles east of the Lesser Antilles, is producing disorganized shower and thunderstorm activity. The system is moving west to northwest at 15 to 20 miles per hour.
According to the US National Weather Service at San Juan, Invest 99 L is forecasted to bring showers, thunderstorms and strong winds to the US Virgin Islands on Wednesday. Heavy rains are expected to begin impacting the USVI Wednesday morning and become stronger throughout the afternoon. Moisture associated with this system is expected to linger over the USVI through Friday and weather conditions should improve by this weekend.
Environmental conditions could become more conducive for Invest 99 L to develop when it moves near Hispaniola and the southeastern and central Bahamas later in the week. An Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft is scheduled to investigate this system today.
Tropical Storm Gaston
Tropical Storm Gaston became the seventh tropical storm of the 2016 Atlantic hurricane season. Gaston is forecast to become a hurricane before encountering unfavorable conditions for further intensification.
Gaston is forecasted to remain over the open waters of the Atlantic.
VITEMA says it will continue to monitor weather systems in the Tropical Atlantic as the region heads into the peak of the 2016 Atlantic Hurricane Season. Mona Barnes, director of VITEMA, is encouraging the community to also monitor weather reports and to be ready in the event a storm threatens the territory.
