Two Shot, One Dead In St. Thomas

Breaking News / Crime / Featured / Top Stories / Virgin Islands / September 3, 2016

ST. THOMAS — Two people were shot here on Saturday night, Police Commissioner Delroy Richards has confirmed to The Consortium. The incident, involving male and female victims, left the man dead and the woman under medical care at the Roy Lester Schneider Hospital (R.L.S.H.).

According to Mr. Richards, between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Saturday night, a vehicle, said to be a car, had stopped on the side of the Moravian Road, adjacent to the Virgin Islands Territorial Emergency Management Agency building, near some traffic lights, when another vehicle came close and fired multiple shots, injuring the woman and killing the man.

Earlier reports suggested that up to five people had been shot, but Mr. Richards said a separate incident — a vehicular accident — around the same time saw a multitude of people checking into the emergency room at R.L.S.H., creating the illusion that the shooting incident was worse than it actually was.

An image obtained by The Consortium shows the victim lying lifeless on the ground, with a gun tucked near the zipper area of his blue jeans. Mr. Richards said the victim, identified as Jamal Nead of Estate Bovoni, was recently released from incarceration and was known among law enforcement as having had many run-ins with the police. Mr. Nead was 26 years old.

Police are asking anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of perpetrators to contact the V.I.P.D. at (340) 774-2211, or the Criminal Investigation Bureau at (340) 714-9801. You can also contact Crime Stoppers at 1(800) 222-8477 or 911.
