Tax Extension Deadline Ends Monday, B.I.R. Reminds

Community Center / News / Virgin Islands / October 16, 2016

ST. CROIX — Bureau of Internal Revenue Director Marvin Pickering is reminding taxpayers who applied for the six-month automatic extension of time to file their 2015 income tax returns, that the deadline to file is Monday, October 17, a Government House press release has made known.

The release asks taxpayers to review the address and ensure that it is the taxpayer’s correct mailing address when filing. Taxpayers are also reminded to verify that they have signed their tax returns, and include a daytime telephone number to allow B.I.R. personnel to make contact if necessary.

Additionally, if a payment plan is not utilized, taxpayers who cannot afford to pay will face a failure to file penalty, which is 5 percent monthly, according to B.I.R. This will allow the taxpayers to seek alternate methods of payment with B.I.R., Mr. Pickering explained.

Taxpayers are urged to meet with the representatives of the Delinquent Accounts and Returns Branch at B.I.R. to set up payment plans.
