ST. THOMAS — A man told police on Tuesday that he was the only occupant of a Lexus when he drove the car into the Veterans Drive Waterfront harbor yesterday morning.
According to V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Glen Dratte, at about 9:30 a.m., officers were dispatched to the area, and found a 2001 Lexus S300/L submerged in the sea.
It remains unclear as to what caused the accident, but someone claiming to be the brother of the victim, posted in a Facebook group called I.E.K.H.S. Class of 2008, that his brother could be bipolar or schizophrenic, and has had some “major episodes.” It was not clear if the episodes occurred before or after the accident.
Either way, the relative said residents should not make fun of the situation.
“Instead of making fun of the situation, I ask, if it’s not too much, to say a prayer for me and my family. Please and thanks,” reads the post, seen here. Video footage is here.
The Virgin Islands Port Authority, Department of Planning and Natural Resources, divers and the V.I.P.D. assisted in the rescue effort, according to Mr. Dratte. The vehicle was recovered and towed by Sherwayne Wrecker Service.
The driver was transported to the Roy Lester Schneider Regional Hospital for medical care.
