ST. THOMAS — The 31st Legislature, called into special session on Tuesday by Governor Kenneth to take action on a sin tax measure that he proposed (that measure ultimately failed), took action on a slew of other measures on Tuesday, approving funds for the Juan F. Luis Hospital, which is facing decertification following a visit from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ surveyors. Lawmakers also approved a new homeschooling measure, among others and decided to act on the remaining bills today.
Approved measures:
Bill No. 31-0184 — Enacting “The Virgin Islands Uniform Guardianship and Protective Proceedings Act.
Bill No. 31-0391 — An Act repealing and reenacting Virgin Islands Code relating to homeschooling.
Bill No. 31-0353 — An Act allocating a percentage of rent proceeds collected from Limetree Bay’s rental of the former HOVENSA housing units now owned by the government, towards the unfunded liability of the Government Employees’ Retirement System.
Multiple bills aimed at regulating the insurance and banking industry in the territory.
Bill No. 31-0398 — An Act eliminating duties collected on goods imported into the territory.
Bill No. 31-0392 — An Act to institute the “Silver Alert System” in the Virgin Islands.
Bill No. 31-0483 — An Act amending the Virgin Islands Code to reorganize the Horse Racing Commissions into a single, nine-member territorial commission.
Bill No. 31-0498 — An Act providing $5 million in funding for repairs at the Juan F. Luis Hospital and Medical Center from the Community Facilities Trust Account.
Bill No. 31-0263 — An Act amending title 17 Virgin Islands Code relating to the membership of the Board of Directors of the University of the Virgin Islands Research and Technology Park Corporation.
Bill No. 31-0491 — A Resolution urging the Virgin Islands delegate to Congress to conduct an inquiry into the disparate treatment of Virgin Islands National Guardsmen.
Bill No. 31-0369 — An Act repealing and reenacting title 9 if Virgin Islands Code regarding the establishment of credit unions and their oversight.
Bill No. 31-0495 — An Act appropriating $300,000 from the Union Arbitration Award and Government Employees Increment Fund to the Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority.
Bill No. 31-0486 — An Act amending Act. No. 7695 to change the real property conveyed to the Enrique Romero Nieves American Legion Post 102, Inc. from Plot No. 184 Estate Anna’s Hope to Plot No. 29 Estate Anna’s Hope.
Bill No. 31 -0507 — An Act amending the Virgin Islands Code to include car washes as a permitted use in the B-3 zoning district.
