ST. THOMAS — Governor Kenneth Mapp in a press conference on Thursday announced that the reward in the homicide of Layla Rivas Paulmino, an infant who was fatally shot earlier this month in St. Thomas was doubled to $40,000 as a result of a $20,000 contribution from Alpine Securities, LLC, a St. Thomas security firm specializing public and private security, according to Government House.
On hand to present the check from Alpine Securities, LLC was Jason Charles. Mr. Charles stated that crime is a community issue and all Virgin Islanders are affected. He presented the check to Mr. Mapp, Police Commissioner Delroy Richards and Attorney General Claude Walker. Mr. Richards encouraged the community to report any information regarding all homicides in the territory and more so the tragic death of the 17-month old child whose funeral was held on Thursday in St. Thomas.
An earlier contribution of $5000 was made by Dennis Alphonse of Low-Price Maintenance & Construction along with Senator Marvin Blyden. This was added to the governor’s initial reward of $10,000 and the $5,000 that was made by an anonymous donor. The reward is provided for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the horrible death of this infant, Mr. Mapp noted.
“We offer Layla’s family our deepest condolences as they lay her to rest today. Her precious life will not be forgotten by our community,” said the governor.
The law enforcement community is engaged in solving this crime, according to Government House. Mr. Mapp reminded anyone with information on the shooting to contact the VIPD Homicide Task Force at (340) 774-2211, Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477 or to call 911.
