Young Man Drowns In St. John

Breaking News / News / Virgin Islands / February 1, 2017

ST. JOHN — A young man who appeared to be in his early 20s drowned in St. John on Tuesday morning, V.I.P.D. Commissioner Delroy Richards confirmed to this publication last night.

While details remain scarce, the young man was a male Caucasian who arrived in St. John last Saturday and was to leave the island this coming Saturday, according to Mr. Richards. He came to the territory aboard a training vessel, the commissioner added.

The sad incident was the first drowning in the territory this year. The victim, who police is awaiting next of kin arrival for positive identification, was discovered in the ocean, floating near some rocks offshore on Tuesday morning.

“He was in his early twenties, and they found him floating in the water,” Mr. Richards said.

The V.I.P.D. is asking anyone with information about this incident to contact St. John police at (340) 693-8880.
