Men Accused Of Shooting At Family, Including Children Riding Bikes, Arrested And Jailed

Crime / News / Virgin Islands / February 12, 2017

ST. CROIX — Two of three men accused of shooting at a woman, her boyfriend and the woman’s children who were riding bicycles while the family gathered outside their apartment in the Marley Housing Community, were arrested, charged and jailed, V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Glen Dratte announced Saturday.

The incident occurred at about 11:28 a.m. on Thursday, following 911 reports of shots being discharged in the Marley Housing Homes in Frederiksted, according to Mr. Dratte.

Upon arrival to the scene, officers made contact with the female victim, who stated that she was outside of her home with her boyfriend and children, who were riding their bikes, when three individuals in a blue vehicle rolled down the passenger-side window and started shooting at them. The victim said she then dropped to the ground, grabbed her children and rushed inside the apartment. The vehicle continued shooting and then fled the area; no one was injured, according to police.

According to Mr. Dratte, patrol units searched the area and located the vehicle, which was then processed and included evidence that revealed two of the individuals involved in the shooting.

Later the same day, at about 11:39 p.m., 24-year-old Okimo J. Heywood and 24-year-old Kherique E. Lewis were both arrested and charged with third-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, and discharging and aiming a firearm.

Heywood and Lewis were remanded to the Golden Grove Detention Center pending their advise-of-rights hearing.

Police are asking anyone with further information about this incident to contact the Criminal Investigation Bureau at 340-778-2211. You may also remain anonymous by contacting Crime Stoppers USVI at 1-800-222-8477 or here, and 911.
