Another Cruise Ship Cancels Call To St. Croix

News / Top Stories / Tourism / Travel / Virgin Islands / March 27, 2017

ST. CROIX — The Virgin Islands Port Authority said on Monday that the Celebrity Summit cruise ship has cancelled its April 9 call to the Ann E. Abramson Marine Facility at Frederiksted.

V.I.P.A.’s Acting Executive Director David Mapp, quoting the ship’s agent, said the Celebrity Summit is scheduled for emergency repairs on the day it was scheduled to be on St. Croix.

The cancellation comes one week after Seatrade, the cruise industry’s most important gathering, where government officials said positive meetings with cruise line executives took place.

The Celebrity Summit’s cancellation is the second for St. Croix this year. On January 7, the Port Authority announced that Holland American Cruise Lines had cancelled the January 10 visit of the company’s Rotterdam ship to the island. No details were given for the ship’s cancellation.

The Celebrity Summit is a Millennium-class cruise ship owned and operated by Celebrity Cruises. It was built in 2001 by the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire, France for Celebrity Cruises as GTS Summit, and renamed with the “Celebrity” prefix in 2008.

The ship features a special restaurant that has original panels and ornamentation from SS Normandie, which includes the bronze statue “LA NORMANDIE” purchased in 2001 from the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida.

Based in Bayonne, New Jersey or San Juan, the ship’s normal cruise track finds it wintering in the southern Caribbean and summering at Bermuda with port calls at popular destinations such as Kings Wharf, and during the winter season calls at St. Croix, St. Kitts, Dominica and Grenada, as well as St. Thomas, St. Maarten, Barbados and Antigua.

When cruising to Canada and New England in fall, key ports of call are: Portland, Bar Harbor, Halifax, Québec City and Charlottetown.
