ST. THOMAS — Government House announced late Saturday that Governor Kenneth Mapp will be traveling to the U.S. mainland today, where he is set to meet with airline executives in Mr. Mapp’s bid to attract more flights to the territory. The release did not reveal where on the mainland the governor would be traveling to, nor did it make known the airlines that the governor, along with Department of Tourism officials, would be meeting with.
During his talk at a recent Chamber of Commerce breakfast meeting, Mr. Mapp spoke about two new direct flights set to begin routes to St. Croix, which he said would help meet the upcoming season’s travel demands.
“One of them will be a new airline to St. Croix, and another one will be an existing airline but will be coming from a different state,” Mr. Mapp said. He said negotiations were still ongoing.
The Government House release pointed to the governor’s 2017 State of the Territory Address, where he said that one of D.O.T.’s goals for this year was to continue to increase the number of nonstop flights to the Virgin Islands from major cities such as Houston. The release added that over the past year, service from that city, as well as Boston and Washington D.C., has been expanded.
Lieutenant Governor Osbert Potter will serve as acting governor from April 2 until the governor’s return on April 7, according to Government House.
