ST. CROIX — With Karibbean Kuts taking the lead, five barbershops from this island brought their grills, food, family and friends, music and talents to the Fort Frederik Beach on Sunday for a day of fun and fellowship — and giveback to the community.
The BarberQ was yet another effort organized by Karibbean Kuts, whose barbers on Mondays visit various organizations giving free haircuts.
The BarberQ was embraced by all the barbershops that participated — Professional Cuts, Royalty Cuts, The Next Cut, Super Cuts and Karibbean Kutz — with owners expressing excitement for the event, while crediting Karibbean Kutz Co-Founder, Carlos Martinez, for coming up with the idea and seeing it through.
The event brought to the fore the other talents of barbers. The deejays were from Super Cuts, while the other shops brought their grills to showoff their cooking skills. There were also activities such as domino games, as well as bouncies for the children.
But even with the food, drinks, music and activities, barbers expressed the most satisfaction in the unity displayed on Sunday. On multiple occasions they gathered talking about their craft and simply having fun conversations. And they all expressed the need to continue such gatherings, with another BarberQ event being mentioned for as early as summer.
They also spoke about creating a formal organization that would represent the interest of barbers.
Rain had threatened to shutdown the appreciation affair, but the gathering persisted well into the night.
Scenes of the event can be seen in the video below:
