ST. CROIX — A man could have lost his life last night if it hadn’t been for some brave St. Croix residents, police and EMS personnel, after his car crashed into a tree near Royal Furniture in Peter’s Rest, mowed a few road signs and wound up in the middle of the road — badly damaged.
The crash victim, a Caucasian male who appeared to be in his 30s, was removed from the vehicle through the backseat by people in the area and police, according to an eye witness. He was later transported to the Juan F. Luis Hospital by EMS on an ambulance for medical care.
Police had cordoned off the area, and as of last night, were still investigating the crash to determine its cause.
St. Croix Rescue personnel were notified of the accident at about 11:30 p.m., however by the time they arrived, the victim had already been transported to the hospital, according to David Goodrich, commander of St. Croix Rescue’s extrication team. Also on the scene was St. Croix Rescue’s extrication team unit officer, Jason Henry.
According to Mr. Goodrich, there was only one vehicle involved in the accident. “Just one vehicle; he veered off the street, hit this tree and took off a couple of [road] signs,” Mr. Goodrich said. The driver’s side of the car, which appeared to be a Ford Focus, was badly damaged.
The victim’s condition is currently unknown, but he survived the accident.
