ST. CROIX — Elmos Wilkes, a Nevisian who lives on St. Croix and recently visited his home country for a funeral, was in serious condition on Wednesday at the Alexandra Hospital in Charlestown, Nevis, after being beaten and robbed, according a family member of the victim. Nevis police have since confirmed the incident.

Mr. Wilkes had decided to stay in Nevis longer than originally planned to attend the island’s popular Culturama event, this year’s showcase being the 43rd annual.

The crime is said to have occurred between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.  “He was found tied up on the road. He is in a mess in hospital. His face is swollen and he has lost his teeth,” said the family member. The incident was reported by multiple Nevis news outlets.

Nevis Police Public Relations Office Superintendent Lyndon David confirmed that “a man was in the Alexandra Hospital nursing injuries to his face.”
