Power Restoration Efforts Continue On St. Croix; Rain And Wind Cause Of Outages, WAPA Says

Community Center / Virgin Islands / Weather / August 18, 2017

ST. CROIX  — The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority on Thursday said work to restore power to the island of St. Croix would continue until all areas are restored. The initial outage occurred Wednesday evening, after W.A.P.A.’s Richmond power plant lost units 11 and 20 which had a cascading effect on the feeders. More than 14,000 customers were affected, WAPA said.

WAPA said its line department crews were dispatched to address isolated electrical service interruptions across portions of the island late Thursday.

Affected areas include: Mary’s Fancy, North Slob, Hibiscus Point, Barren Spot, Upper Love (Annaly Farm), Clairmont, Hogensberg, Constitution Hill and Estate Strawberry.

All efforts are being made to restore service to the affected customers as quickly and as safely as possible, according to the semiautonomous entity. All of Thursday’s service interruptions have been caused by weather conditions across the territory, WAPA said.

To report an isolated electrical service interruption, call 340-773-0150 on St. Croix and 340-774-1424 on St. Thomas-St. John.
