St. Croix Resident Wins $2 Million In Latest Powerball Drawing

News / Virgin Islands / August 25, 2017

ST. CROIX — The Caribbean Lottery on Thursday announced that a St. Croix resident won $2 million in the latest, record-breaking $758.7 million Powerball drawing. The winning ticket was sold on Wednesday.

According to Caribbean Lottery, the winning $2 million ticket, called a match 5, was bought at the Sunny Isle office. The lucky player matched the first five numbers — 6-7-16-23-26 — but did not match the Powerball. The match 5 ticket produced a $1 million win, which was doubled by the lottery because the player paid an extra $1 for the power play option. In the territory, there were over 2,700 winning tickets sold that matched up to 3 numbers, according to Caribbean Lottery.

The St. Croix winner’s identity was not revealed.

The winner on the U.S. mainland was revealed to be 53-year-old Massachusetts resident Mavis Wanczyk.

The Massachusetts State Lottery announced Wanczyk as the holder of the lucky ticket for Wednesday’s $758.7 million Powerball jackpot, the largest haul in North American history for a single winning ticket.

“It’s just a pipe dream I’ve always had,” Wanczyk told reporters during a press conference Thursday. “It’s just a chance I had to take.”

Wanczyk bought the Powerball ticket at the Pride Station and Store near where she works in Chicopee, located some 90 miles west of Boston. The winning numbers for the jackpot drawn Wednesday night were 6, 7, 16, 23, 26, and the final number, called the Powerball, was 4.
