Dept. Of Education St. Croix District Announces Bus Schedule For Split Session School Opening On Monday

Community Center / Education / Virgin Islands / October 21, 2017

The Office of the Insular Superintendent, St. Croix District announced late Saturday that school bus service will resume on Monday, October 23 as some schools reopen for the 2017-18 school year. A significant amount of buses in the Ann Abramson Bus Company fleet sustained hurricane-related damages, leaving only six buses operational. The district has modified the bus schedule to reflect accommodations for new split session school times.

Due to low-hanging wires and debris preventing buses from safely entering residential areas, there have been bus stop changes to the Campo Rico and Profit Hill communities. Students from the Campo Rico area will be picked up at the bus shanty on Queen Mary Highway and students from Profit Hill will be picked up at the Clifton Hill bus stop. Bus service will resume pick-up at bus stops in both communities once roadways have been cleared.

In addition, new bus stops have been added to accommodate students residing nearby their original school sites. The three newly established pick-up points are in front of the east gate of the Pearl B. Larsen Elementary School, in front of the north gate of the John H. Woodson Jr. High School and in front of the Arthur A. Richards Jr. High School.

The following times are the earliest estimated time of arrival at bus stops:

Morning Session Schools

·      Central High School

o   6:00 a.m. – East End buses

o   6:30 a.m. – All other bus stops

·      Educational Complex

o   6:00 a.m. – West End buses

o   6:30 a.m. – All other bus stops

·      Juanita Gardine Elementary

o   6:45 a.m. – All bus stops

Afternoon Session Schools

·      Elena L. Christian Jr. High

o   10:45 a.m. – East End buses

o   11:00 a.m. – All other bus stops

·      John H. Woodson Jr. High

o   11:00 a.m. – All bus stops

·      Arthur A. Richards Jr. High

o   11:00 a.m. – All bus stops

·      Pearl B. Larsen Elementary

o   10:45 a.m. East End buses

o   11:00 a.m. All other bus stops

The district informs the public that the Department of Education also funds and regulates bus service for private and parochial schools, however, transportation services for those non-public schools will not resume on Monday, October 23. The bus company is working to repair all buses that were operational before Hurricane Maria’s passage and will resume service to all schools once buses are road ready.

Students are asked to refrain from playing with roadside debris and advised that food and drinks are not allowed on buses.

St. Thomas – St. John District

On Monday, October 23 the Ulla F. Muller Elementary School and the Gladys Abraham Elementary School will begin split session instruction at the Muller campus in Contant. Muller students will attend the morning session from 7:30 a.m. to 12 noon and Gladys Abraham students will report for the afternoon session, 11:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Buses will begin pick-up of Muller students on their normal routes at 6:15 a.m. and buses for Gladys Abraham students will begin pick-up at 10:15 a.m. An additional pick-up point has been established for Gladys Abraham students in the Kirwan Terrace community.

The status of Yvonne Milliner-Bowsky/E. Benjamin Oliver and Lockhart Elementary schools will be announced.
