ST. CROIX — A man whose body was found washed ashore at the Estate Shoys Beach, seen above, on Sunday, was believed to have been pulled into deep waters by a rip current and wound up drowning, V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Glen Dratte announced late Monday.
According to Mr. Dratte, who cited a police report, on Friday at approximately 9:26 a.m., a call was placed to the 911 emergency call center by someone who said that a family member had gone missing at Shoys’ Beach.
The family member, who identified the missing person as Jovere Williams, said Mr. Williams, 24, a carpenter, was working in Estate Shoys and had gone to the beach to “refresh himself,” which was when the current took him, according to the V.I.P.D.
On Sunday at 11:44 a.m., Mr. Williams’s body was found washed ashore by his employer and a family member, according to police. The V.I.P.D.’s forensic unit was present at the location of the discovery, Mr. Dratte said.
The V.I.P.D. along with the Department of Planning and Natural Resources removed the body and transported the victim by boat to the Gallows Bay dock, where the body was turned over to staff members of the Medical Examiner’s Office.
