WAPA Says Gusty Winds Having Effect On Power Lines; Isolated Service Interruptions Reported In Both Districts

Community Center / News / Virgin Islands / February 13, 2018

The gusty winds of the last couple of days, and which are forecast to affect the territory through at least Wednesday, are impacting WAPA’s distribution lines, causing isolated service interruptions in some locations, WAPA announced Tuesday.

Interim Executive Director Clinton Hedrington, Jr. advised that the winds are causing primary lines to make contact with each other, which results in service interruptions to customers.

“The winds have had an adverse effect on the distribution system over the last few days and our crews have been diligently restoring service to customers as the interruptions occur. There have also been some pole fires associated with the effects of the gusty winds,” he said.

Mr. Hedrington apologized to the public for the inconvenience caused by the isolated service interruptions, and assured customers that should service be interrupted, all efforts will be made to restore service as quickly and as safely as possible.

As of early Tuesday afternoon, both power plants were functioning normally and there were no major service interruptions reported in either district.

WAPA earlier this week acknowledged that the St. Thomas-St. John District was experienced power interruptions, however those issues were rectified by late Sunday.
