ST. THOMAS — Gustavo Adolfo Jimenez Polanco, 29, a Dominican Republic national, made his initial appearance Monday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Ruth Miller after he was arrested at the Cyril E. King Airport on Saturday and charged with illegal reentry into the United States, United States Attorney Gretchen C.F. Shappert announced. Today, Magistrate Judge Miller ordered Polanco detained pending further proceedings.
According to court records, Polanco appeared at the Cyril E. King Airport on Saturday, and was questioned after he presented himself to the primary inspector at the Customs and Border Protection checkpoint. The primary inspector referred him to secondary inspection where it was determined that Polanco was previously deported from the United States on July 1, 2014.
Under federal law, Polanco faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
This case is being investigated by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). It is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Everard E. Potter.
United States Attorney Shappert reminds the public that a complaint is merely a formal charging document and is not evidence of guilt. Every defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
