ST. THOMAS — This year’s Virgin Islands Carnival Queen Show went into the early hours of Sunday morning at the Lionel Roberts Stadium here, with heavy showers wetting the stage and prolonging the event. But after hours of action and some pausing, contestant number 1, Jikelle Michael, emerged as the winner; the announcement saw the crowd erupting with cheers.

Among other gifts, the winner was awarded $5,000. Her responsibilities include representing the territory at events both local and abroad, participating in community-minded activities, being an upright individual and role model to young Virgin Islanders, and more.

We managed to capture some footage of the announcement, although not the best quality, as the contestants were placed under a tent to shelter from the showers.

Last year’s carnival queen was Mary-Alice Prosper.
