ST. CROIX — On May 9, Country Day School Alumna and Trustee, Nesha Chistian-Hendrickson, presented Head of School Kari Loya with a check of $5,000 for Hurricane Maria recovery efforts at the Good Hope Country Day School (G.H.C.D.), according to a release issued today.
In appreciation, Ms. Loya stated, “We will only become a world-class school if we engage all of our talented alumni throughout the country and the world in meaningful ways.”
Country Day School Alumi Emron and Ezmon Walwyn did just that by donating $5,000 from their nonprofit “Esterlyn’s House” to aid G.H.C.D.S. with Hurricane Maria recovery efforts, the release said.
“Esterlyn’s House wants to spread our message of hope and compassion,” said the nonprofit. “We believe that a single action can make a difference in the community. However, collective action can greatly impact the world. Through advocacy, philanthropy and outreach activities, our team strives to assist those enduring the calamities and tribulations that occur in life. It is not a matter of if but when will these issues occur. We will be here to lend a helping hand.”
Established in November 2016, Esterlyn’s House was created in order to assist in the care of patients and their families in need, according to the release.
“In 2005 my father suffered a stroke in the Caribbean Islands and had to be medically transported to Miami,” said Emron. “I had to fly emergently to Miami and meet my mother in his hospital room. She slept in the hospital day and night. Fortunately, I had a high school friend that was living in Miami. He helped us out in running errands, allowed me to stay in his apartment and drove us around to find facilities to assist in the care of my Dad.”
While training in geriatrics and palliative care, Emron cared for numerous patients and families that were in the same situation needing services like transportation, housing and respite care, the release said.
