The Virgin Islands Territorial Emergency Management Agency (VITEMA) will be replacing VI-Alert, its current emergency notification system, and transitioning to a new emergency notification system for the U.S. Virgin Islands called “Alert VI”, on Friday May 11 — the same day of VITEMA’s new website launch, VITEMA said Thursday. VI-Alert will no longer be used after May 31, 2018.
VITEMA is encouraging all residents to begin signing up for Alert VI, the new mass notification system. The registration is free. Alert VI will provide VITEMA and partnering agencies the capability to keep residents and visitors safe and informed with quick and reliable emergency notifications and public service announcements, the agency said.
Once you sign up to the new alert system, you will receive weather alerts, public safety and service disruption alerts and more, VITEMA said.
If you live in one area but work in another, you can add up to five location addresses that you would like to receive alerts for such as home, work, school and extended family addresses. The agency is encouraging residents to sign up to receive messages via text, email, cellphone, landline, Voice Over Internet Provider (VoIP) and hearing-impaired devices.
Download the free Everbridge Public Safety app from Apple or Android stores and receive your alerts on the app, as well as other public messages around the U.S. in the event you’re traveling, VITEMA said.
Virgin Islands residents can begin signing up here.
“As the sole governmental Agency responsible for All-Hazards response, we have a commitment to ensure public safety, community awareness and emergency response. To uphold this commitment, when critical information and public service announcements arise, we need to reach our residents and visitors as quickly and reliably as possible,” said VITEMA Director Mona Barnes.
