Virgin Islander Rona St. John Thomas, who lives in at Atlanta and is part of the City Talkers Toastmasters Club, has earned the Distinguished Toastmasters (DTM) award from Toastmasters International, a release issued Sunday makes known. The DTM honor is the highest recognition a member may receive.
According to the release, the award is given only to those who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and communication skills and who have used these skills to help others in their self-development. Less than .05 percent of 4 million past and present Toastmasters members have achieved the elite DTM status.
The designation award recognizes a superior level of commitment and achievement in both communications and leadership. To receive the award, Ms. Thomas had to deliver at least 40 speeches; participate in leadership projects including high-performance leadership; become a new club sponsor or mentor or a successful club coach; spend six months as a club officer, and serve one full year of district leadership, according to the release.
“Attaining this award is not an easy task,” said Daniel Rex, chief executive officer of the nonprofit Toastmasters International.
The Distinguished Toastmasters designation is bestowed only to those who have proven exceptional mastery of communication and leadership skills and employ these abilities to mentor others in their Toastmasters journey.
“Thomas has met all of our rigorous requirements,” Mr. Rex said.
Ms. Thomas received her DTM recognition medal May 5 at a special awards ceremony before more than 300 fellow Toastmasters from around the state during the District 44 Annual Conference awards luncheon, at the Atlanta Marriott Alpharetta ballroom Alpharetta, Georgia.
