While Hurricane Beryl continued its track across the central Atlantic, WAPA Executive Director Lawrence J. Kupfer convened a meeting of the utility’s division directors on Friday to review the authority’s level of preparedness in the event of any impact from the Category One Hurricane, WAPA announced late Friday.
“We have monitored this developing weather system over the last several days and have had regular discussions about any effect of the storm on WAPA. On Friday, our discussions focused on any response that may be required primarily on St. Croix. Contractor crews performing permanent repairs to the system are prepared to demobilize their operations by the weekend should the storm system maintain its current track,” Mr. Kupfer said.
Additionally, work sites within the power plant compounds are being secured. WAPA maintains a state of readiness at all times for not only wind storms, such as Hurricane Beryl, but for any man-made or other natural disaster that may befall the territory. “The meeting was more along the lines of an overview of our emergency plans to ensure all is ship shape,” Mr. Kupfer said.
Should it become necessary, WAPA said it will provide specific messaging to the public just ahead of any storm impact as well as updates on restoration of service efforts should that be required.
