BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS — A man who was rescued after the small aircraft he was piloting crashed at the Terrence B Lettsome International Airport on Beef Island, has died, according to multiple BVI news outlets, the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force, and the BVI Airports Authority.
BVI police announced the death of the victim at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday. The accident occurred around 4:17 p.m. Wednesday.
BVI first responders rushed to the scene following the crash, according to reports. Police said the plane overran the airport’s runway and ended up in the sea. An amateur video sent to BVI news outlets shows one BVI resident performing what appeared to be cardiopulmonary resuscitation — CPR — on the crash victim.
According to the BVI Airports Authority, the plane had departed the Terrence B Lettsome International Airport and was destined to Pointe a Pitre International Airport (TFFR) in Guadeloupe, when it crashed into the waters off the east northeast end of runway 07.
BVI Airport Authority’s Rescue and Fire Fighting Service moved swiftly into action and was able to quickly secure the pilot, the only occupant of the aircraft, the authority said. Following the incident, the airport was temporarily closed.
As of Wednesday, the name of the victim was not released.
