Female Arrested On Assault Charge

Crime / News / Virgin Islands / August 31, 2018

A woman was arrested and charged with third-degree assault and possession of a dangerous weapon during the commission of a crime, after allegedly joining with another suspect to beat a woman, which led to the victim’s hospitalization for a laceration in her upper body, V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Glen Dratte has announced.

According to police, on Wednesday at 4:30 a.m., officers from the Ancilmo Marshall Command Police Station were dispatched to an assault victim who was at the Juan F. Luis Hospital receiving care.

Upon arrival to the medical facility, officers made contact with a female victim who was being treated for a laceration to her upper body.

The victim stated that she was assaulted by two females while she was “hanging out” at the El Rincon Bar located in Fredriksted. Criminal Investigations Bureau (C.I.B.) detectives followed up on the case and discovered that one of the female suspects involved was 23-year-old Misaela Melendez, according to Mr. Dratte.

An arrest warrant was issued by a Superior Court Magistrate for the arrest of Ms. Melendez on Wednesday. And on Thursday at approximately 12:43 p.m., C.I.B. detectives made contact with Ms. Melendez, served her with the warrant and placed her under arrest.

The suspect was authorized to be released on her own recognizance by a magistrate of the court under the condition that she appears at the Superior Court on the date of her advisement hearing, Mr. Dratte said.
