A recent joint meeting, with officials from the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (WAPA) and the Public Services Commission (PSC), provided a forum for an open discussion on the desired outcomes of a new USVI rooftop solar program, WAPA announced today.
The working session was held at the request of Governor Kenneth Mapp, who at an earlier news conference with former President Bill Clinton noted, “The Mapp-Potter administration is committed to working with the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority and the Public Services Commission to adopt new regulations allowing residents and building owners to install renewable energy sources and remain connected to the grid for redundancy.”
The meeting, facilitated by Bloomberg Associates and the Department of Energy, was headlined by three key discussion areas:
- Building alignment among WAPA and the PSC of the USVI’s program needs and immediate priorities.
- Reviewing program practices in other jurisdictions, with a focus on how those programs were designed to address objectives similar to the Virgin Islands.
- Developing a timeline for program design efforts and reviewing any additional analysis required.
WAPA and the PSC agreed on a six-month timeframe to develop the interconnection as well as control standards and tariffs needed to enable the new rooftop program. The group agreed to reconvene in November to review the status of the work, according to the release.
Officials of WAPA and the PSC met recently to discuss desired outcomes of a new rooftop solar program.
WAPA was represented by Executive Director Lawrence Kupfer and staff, along with WAPA governing board Chairwoman Elizabeth Armstrong and Vice- Chairman Hubert Turnbull. The PSC was represented by Director Donald Cole and staff, along with PSC Chairman Raymond Williams and PSC member and former chairman, Johann Clendenin.
