ST. THOMAS — An incident at the University of the Virgin Islands campus in St. Thomas on Wednesday left a UVI campus officer and the suspect injured, V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Glen Dratte said in a release issued late Wednesday.
The incident occurred at about 6:10 p.m. on Wednesday. Mr. Dratte said the 911 emergency call center dispatched patrol units to investigate the matter, however, the suspect had already been transported to the Schneider Regional Medical Center to receive care.
According to Mr. Dratte, the UVI campus officer was escorting a suspect off the UVI property when he was struck by the suspect in the back with a large piece of rock. The officer then discharged his firearm, striking the suspect at least once to bring the incident to an end, Mr. Dratte said in the release.
Mr. Dratte said both the suspect and UVI campus officer were treated for their injuries.
The matter is being investigated by the Criminal Investigation Bureau.
